Sinn Féin leaders have announced that they will not be traveling to Washington DC for St Patrick’s Day events at the White House in protest over Donald Trump’s position on Gaza.

Addressing a news conference, Sinn Féin party leader Mary Lou McDonald said she could not visit Washington “while there was a threat of mass expulsion hanging over the Palestinian people”.

Earlier this month, Donald Trump triggered international outrage when he suggested that the US would take control of the Gaza Strip and permanently relocate its Palestinian inhabitants elsewhere.

Northern Ireland First Minister Michelle O’Neill also addressed a press conference in Dublin and said,

“The decision not to travel to the White House has not been taken lightly, but it is taken conscious of the responsibility each of us as individuals have to call out injustice.”

Ireland has remained one of the most vocal defenders of the Palestinian cause from within the European Union.
