SriLankan Airlines has unveiled a high-profile international branding initiative to promote the Colombo Nawam Maha Perahera 2026, transforming one of its Airbus A320neo aircraft into what has been described as a “flying ambassador” for the Sinhala Buddhist festival.
According to the Gangaramaya Temple, the specially designed aircraft livery will carry the imagery and symbolism of the Nawam Maha Perahera across SriLankan Airlines’ international route network, positioning the procession not only as a religious event but also as a major cultural and tourism attraction. The initiative frames Colombo as a destination of heritage, tradition and spirituality.
The Nawam Maha Perahera, organised under the auspices of the Gangaramaya Temple, is a distinctly Sinhala Buddhist religious procession.
The concept for the international branding initiative was initiated by a Buddhist monk, who reportedly identified aviation as a platform for cultural diplomacy. The project has been realised through the Nawam Maha Perahera Committee, devotees and supporters, alongside institutional collaboration with the Prime Minister’s Office and the Ministry of Aviation, with the full cooperation of SriLankan Airlines.
While the Gangaramaya Temple and the Nawam Maha Perahera Committee stated that the aircraft branding was fully funded by them, the extensive involvement of state institutions and the national airline has raised concerns about the continued blurring of lines between state resources and the promotion of Sinhala Buddhist religious identity.
SriLankan Airlines extended organisational support across multiple levels, including its board, senior management, engineering and technical teams, designers and frontline staff. Recently, Buddhist monk Kirinde Assaji, members of the Nawam Maha Perahera Committee and resident young monks from the Gangaramaya Temple visited the airline’s engineering and operations facilities in Katunayake to observe the branding work and offer blessings to staff.
