Despite repeated long-lasting power cuts across the island, Sri Lanka has reportedly confirmed that a series of floodlit day/night cricket matches with the Australian team will still be going ahead.

As reports emerge of Australian cricketers expressing their unease at touring Sri Lanka, officials from Sri Lanka Cricket remained steadfast in their decision to continue with the matches despite the worst economic crisis in living memory.

Concerns had been raised regarding the floodlit day/night matches which go on through the evening and the amount of travelling teams would have to do around the island, at a time when power cuts and fuel shortages have ravaged the country.

SLC Secretary Mohan de Silva however told the Daily Mirror that no changes had been planned.

“The matches are taking place as scheduled,” de Silva said, adding “We also have to consider the requirements of the broadcast partner.”

He also said matches, which are scheduled in Kandy, Colombo, Pallekele and Galle, would continue at those venues, despite the need to travel.

“If we move the matches around now, we will face a logistical problem,” said de Silva.
