Serbia to investigate genocide fugitive aides

Serbia has announced that they will investigate 13 persons accused of aiding genocide fugitives from evading justice, after criticism from a UN tribunal last month.

Following condemnation from the UN tribunal for the former Yugoslavia, Serbia announced that 13 people, including a high ranking military official, would be amongst those investigated for aiding genocide suspects Radovan Karadzic and Ratko Mladic before their eventual capture.

Prosecutor Vojislav Vukcevic told reporters that the "now-retired top general of military intelligence" was suspected of passing information to Mladic, helping him avoid arrest. He went on to say,
"With proceedings against the helpers we want to close the Hague tribunal story and to demonstrate that no one is above the law."
Vukcevic also stated that a "close and well-known associate" of the former UN war crimes prosecutor Carla Del Ponte and an official from the Serbian foreign ministry helped Croatian Serb wartime leader Goran Hadzic evade capture, until he was caught by authorities in July 2011. However, he said that there was insufficient evidence to arrest either.
