Hollywood actress Scarlett Johansson has quit her role as an Oxfam ambassador, after facing criticism for her endorsement of an Israeli company based in settlements declared illegal under international law.
Oxfam International opposes all trade with companies based in the settlements and labelled Johansson’s endorsement of SodaStream “incompatible” with her role as Oxfam Global Ambassador. In a statement, Oxfam said,

“Oxfam believes that businesses, such as SodaStream, that operate in settlements further the ongoing poverty and denial of rights of the Palestinian communities that we work to support. Oxfam is opposed to all trade from Israeli settlements, which are illegal under international law.”The BBC reported that 500,000 Jews live in more than 100 settlements in the West Bank and East Jerusalem, which have been built since Israel’s 1967 occupation.
