Rusted firearm and ammunition recovered in Jaffna

Firearm found in rustic condition

An R-56 type firearm in a rusted condition, was recovered by the police on 15th April in the Gurunagar area of Jaffna.

The weapon was discovered beneath a long-abandoned and damaged boat located near the fishing dock adjacent to the five-storey housing complex in Gurunagar. Local fishermen, while attempting to remove the derelict boat, stumbled upon the firearm concealed underneath.

Upon being informed to the local police, they arrived at the scene and recovered the firearm along with a cache of ammunition.

Due to having been buried in the soil for an extended period, both the recovered weapon and ammunition were found in a heavily corroded state.

The Police have launched further investigations into the circumstances surrounding the recovery of the firearm.
