Restoration at Kanagapuram Thuyilum Illam complete for Maaveerar Naal commemoration

Relatives of fallen LTTE cadres and residents finished clearing Kanagapuram Thuyilum Illam in Kilinochchi today.

They collected broken gravestones to form a makeshift monument ahead of tomorrow's Maaveerar Naal remembrance event.

Kanagapuram Thuyilum Illam was one of the largest cemeteries built and maintained by the LTTE to house the bodies of fallen Tamil fighters. It was bulldozed over by the Sri Lankan state following the end of the armed conflict. Over recent years, Tamils have gathered at Kanagapuram Thuyilum in large numbers to commemorate the fallen.

Sri Lanka is one of the most dangerous places in the world to be a journalist. Tamil journalists are particularly at threat, with at least 41 media workers known to have been killed by the Sri Lankan state or its paramilitaries during and after the armed conflict.

Despite the risks, our team on the ground remain committed to providing detailed and accurate reporting of developments in the Tamil homeland, across the island and around the world, as well as providing expert analysis and insight from the Tamil point of view
