Protestors in Batticaloa demanded to know the whereabouts of people who were disappeared from 1958 to more recent times, urging the new government to provide answers, Battinews reported.
Relatives of the disappeared were joined at the Gandhi Square by TNA MPs P Ariyenenthiran and Pon Selvarasa, who were given a petition by the protestors, calling on President Maithripala Sirisena to take action.
The head of the Batticaloa Gandhi Sevai Union, who organised the protest along with relatives of the disappeared, said only 332 cases of disappearances were investigated by the presidential commission of inquiry, although around 2,200 complaints from 14 regional-secretary divisions were received.
Eastern Provincial Council members R Thurairatnam, M Nadarasa, Pirasanna Inthirakumar, and G Vellimalai were also present at the protest.
