Ranil and UNP facing consequences for failing to hold Rajapaksas accountable - TNA MP

The United National Party (UNP) and its leader Ranil Wickremesinghe are now facing the consequences of failing to hold Mahinda Rajapaksa accountable, a TNA MP has said.

“The UNP should have thrown Mahinda Rajapaksa and his crew in jail as soon as they came to power in 2015,” said MP for Batticaloa district, S Yogeswaran.

“Ranil Wickremesinghe is now experiencing the consequences for that [failure],” he said.

Yogeswaran also stated that the Tamil people had held no delusions that the Sri Lankan president Maithripala Sirisena would deliver solutions for the ethnic conflict or Tamil grievances, but that they had simply supported him in the 2015 presidential election as an anti-Rajapaksa vote, similar to how some Tamil people supported Sarath Fonseka in the 2010 presidential election.

“The head of state, Maithri, is now the cause of the current political upheaval in the country,” he said.
