The Sri Lankan president accused Norway of funding the Liberation Tamil Tigers of Tamil Eelam during the three-decade ethnic conflict reports Colombo Page.
Speaking at a function in Kurunegala on Sunday, Mahinda Rajapaksa, alleged that the government had received evidence suggesting the former Norwegian government’s involvement in funding the LTTE.
The Sri Lankan president said that the Norwegian government and peace envoy, Eric Solheim, had discouraged him from pursuing a military solution, reports Colombo Page.
“They said the military will not be able to defeat the LTTE but our military proved them wrong,” said Mahinda Rajapaksa.
Deeming the former Norwegian peace envoy, Eric Solheim, a LTTE supporter, Rajapaksa criticised indications that the envoy would work with the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights investigation into Sri Lanka (OISL).
“They (Norway) gave money to the LTTE. The Norwegian government must investigate. We have evidence on how they funded terrorists,” said Mahinda Rajapaksa.
