Protests held in Jaffna against attempted land grab by Sri Lankan military

A protest was held against the attempted land grab in Jaffna, in which four acres of private land were taken for the Karkovalam Army camp.

Protesters blocked land surveyors and officials who had come to survey the land and stated the land would not be handed over to the army. Tamil land continues to be seized by the Sri Lankan government for military purposes.

This has led to increased surveillance of the Tamil populace across the North-East. Despite the war ending 12 years ago military land grabs are frequent, earlier this year the Sri Lankan Navy has stepped up land grab operations in Mullaitivu, redoubling efforts to seize 617 acres of private land which was gazetted in 2017 for appropriation for the construction of 'Vattuvakal Gotabaya Navy base'.
