President’s Counsel slams plan to scrap PTA

The President’s Counsel in Sri Lanka has lashed out at the government over reported plans to scrap the much criticised Prevention of Terrorism Act, reports The Island.

Manohara de Silva said Sri Lanka “was still vulnerable to terrorism” and slammed the Sri Lankan government over plans to scrap the law, after sustained international pressure.

Claiming the PTA had “contributed to annihilation of terrorism”, Mr De Silva added that Tamil political parties such as the TNA were “seeking to achieve a separate state”. Moves such as scrapping the PTA and implementation of the 13 Amendment “would have a disastrous impact on the country,” he added.

The President’s Counsel is an appointed position in Sri Lanka, where the president selects “Attorneys-at-Law who have reached eminence in the profession and have maintained high standards of conduct and professional rectitude".
