President assumes duties

The newly elected president, Maithripala Sirisena, formally assumed his duties on Monday at the Presidential Secretariat.

Flanked by the UNP leader and Sri Lanka's new prime minister, Ranil Wickremasinghe, as well as the Tamil National Alliance (TNA) leader, R Sampanthan and Sri Lanka Muslim Congress (SLMC) head Rauf Hakeem, President Sirisena invited everyone to join in the formation of a new political culture free "where poverty would be alleviated and corruption eliminated".

"As stated in his 100-day programme, the President wished to achieve a definite difference and implement the policies of his manifesto. He would be thankful to everyone who assisted him in this effort and requested all representatives of the people and everyone else to assist him," state media reported.

Despite the risks, our team on the ground remain committed to providing detailed and accurate reporting of developments in the Tamil homeland, across the island and around the world, as well as providing expert analysis and insight from the Tamil point of view
