Preparations for the 2025 Maaveerar Naal commemorations at the Kodalikallu Maaveerar Thuyilum Illam in Mullaitivu began yesterday, as volunteers gathered to ready the site ahead of next week’s remembrance events.
The day opened with the lighting of the communal flame and the offering of floral tributes before work commenced across the cemetery grounds. Volunteers undertook cleaning, clearing, and structural preparations to ready the site for the annual commemoration, which honours the tens of thousands of Maaveerar - or Great Heroes - who gave their lives in the struggle for the liberation of the Tamil homeland.

Organisers have called on residents from neighbouring villages, particularly the parents and relatives of the Maaveerar who live in the vicinity of the Kodalikallu cemetery, to join the preparations and take part in this year’s remembrance.

They emphasised that the involvement of local families is central to preserving the dignity of the site and ensuring that the sacrifices of the Tamil nation’s fallen heroes continue to be remembered with collective dedication.
