PPT releases verdict on genocide in Sri Lanka

The Permanent Peoples’ Tribunal has released the full report of their high profile session held in Bremen, Germany last month, where they unanimously ruled that Sri Lanka was guilty of genocide.

Released at the Geneva Press Club, the full report discloses the panel’s findings, where they ruled that not only was Sri Lanka was guilty of genocide, but that the UK and USA were also guilty of complicity. The role of India was decided to be examined further.

The panel, which included the former assistant Secretary-General of the United Nations, prominent lawyers and academics in the field of international humanitarian law, noted that,

“the carefully documented evidence, which includes graphic eye witness accounts, affirms that these atrocities were committed with the intent to physically eliminate Eelam Tamils on the basis of their group identity”.

It went on to call on the United Nations to implement

“the creation of an international commission of inquiry – which excludes the states which have been directly and/or indirectly linked to the genocidal process – could be a first step in this direction”.
