Outrage after drunk Sri Lankan soldier assaults civilians

The Sri Lankan army has announced an investigation into an incident in Gampaha in which a drunk uniformed soldier reportedly attempted to assault some civilians whilst at an eatery in Gampaha.

Footage of the incident, which went viral on social media, showed the soldier attempting to assault other customers.

The soldier is reportedly attached to Sri Lanka’s Kilinochchi base and was seen getting into a vehicle that belonged to the military's Kilinochchi Division.

“A comprehensive investigation has been launched over the video and the incident,” the Army media unit said.

This is not the first incident of inebriated security forces members assaulting civilians. Just last year the Human Rights Commission Of Sri Lanka (HRCSL) has launched an investigation into the incident in which a young Tamil man from Jaffna among several other youngsters, were brutally assaulted by off-duty police officers and dragged to a police station.
