No more camp life: May Day rally in Jaffna

Labour and civil society groups in Jaffna marked May Day with a rally outside the university today.

No more camp life for our descendants

Demonstrators gathered in front of the University of Jaffna before marching through Palali Road and around Kantharmadam, before gathering again outside the campus.

During the rally, participants chanted and held banners calling for Tamil political prisoners to be freed, for military-occupied lands to be returned to the people, for an urgent solution to the disappearances issue, for an international investigation into genocide and for an end to the systematic Sinhalisation of the Tamil homeland.

Organisations involved in arranging the rally were Ceylon Teachers Union, University Employees Union of Jaffna University, Rural Workers Union, Theatre Action Group, Centre for Tamil Livelihood Rights and Social Research Council.

We need your support

Sri Lanka is one of the most dangerous places in the world to be a journalist. Tamil journalists are particularly at threat, with at least 41 media workers known to have been killed by the Sri Lankan state or its paramilitaries during and after the armed conflict.

Despite the risks, our team on the ground remain committed to providing detailed and accurate reporting of developments in the Tamil homeland, across the island and around the world, as well as providing expert analysis and insight from the Tamil point of view

We need your support in keeping our journalism going. Support our work today.
