New Police Stations opened in Vavuniya and Mannar

Police Posts in Chidambarapuram and Nelukkulam areas of Vavuniya District, have been upgraded to the rank of ‘Police Stations’ and were inaugurated earlier today.

The inauguration of new police stations indicates the growing securitisation of the Tamil homeland by the Sri Lankan government.

This is part of a project launched by Sri Lankan Public Security Minister Sarath Weerasekara to open up 197 new Police Stations across the island supposedly to make it easier for the public to file complaints.

Northern Province Deputy Inspector of Police (DIG) Sanjeewa Dharmaratne served as the Chief Guest of the inauguration ceremony and formally opened up the police stations.

Vavuniya DIG L.A. Seneviratne and other police officials in the district were also in attendance during the proceedings.

As part of the same initiative, a Police Post in the Uyilankulam locality of Mannar district was also upgraded to the level of a Police Station.
