New date announced for local elections in Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka's Election Commission have announced April 25, 2023 as a possible date for the local government elections to take place after they were postponed last month.

The local elections were due to take place on March 9.2023 but were delayed due to the lack of funding as Sri Lanka continues to face an economic crisis.

In their statement, the Election Commission reportedly stated that the local elections were delayed due to “unexpected and unavoidable circumstances relating to the printing of ballot papers and other facilities pertaining to the election."

Last month, the National People's Power (NPP) party held a protest in the capital, Colombo, against the postponed local elections. Sri Lankan police dispersed the protesters using water cannons and tear gas, leaving one dead and many injured.
