Vavuniya remembers Tamil genocide victims with temple remembrance ceremony

A Tamil Genocide Day Remembrance event was held in Vavuniya as part of ongoing commemorations marking the 17th anniversary of the Mullivaikkal genocide, with members of the public gathering to honour those killed during the final stages of the armed conflict in 2009.

The observance took place at the Gurumankaadu Pillaiyar Temple and was organised by the Vavuniya District Anthanar Association.

Members of the public, devotees and representatives of various civil organisations participated in the ceremony.

Attendees lit memorial lamps and took part in religious observances and prayers seeking spiritual peace for those who were killed during the genocide.

The remembrance forms part of wider commemorative events being held across the Tamil homeland during for May 18, when Tamils around the world remember the tens of thousands of civilians massacred in Mullivaikkal.
