More Canadian leaders sent messages to mark Tamil Eelam National Flag Raising Day, honouring the Tamil nation’s strength and perseverance in the face of immense adversity.
Jagmeet Singh, leader of Canada’s New Democratic Party, said "on behalf of all New Democrats, I want to wish you a very happy Tamil Eelam National Flag Raising Day”.
“This is a testament to how far your community has come. Overcoming such adversity has shown your resilience.”
“For a community that has undergone so much oppression, violence, and yes, even genocide, to be able to raise the Tamil Eelam flag means so much. I think about all the people who sacrificed to get to this moment. A flag that, at one point, was something that you could not raise, that you could not fly, that was not honoured or respected, is now being celebrated in this manner. It is truly an important achievement, and on behalf of all New Democrats, I want to congratulate you on achieving this day and wish you a very important celebration today.”
Meanwhile, Patrick Brown, Mayor of Brampton, also shared a message, highlighting his city’s role in honouring the Tamil Eelam flag.
“Brampton is one of those cities that proudly hoist the Tamil Eelam national flag as a symbol of the community’s resilience. In the face of genocide, in the face of a government that committed grave atrocities and human rights abuses, the Tamil community survived and flourished around the world.”
“In the face of physical and cultural genocide, the community has shown incredible resilience. The flag is a symbol of resilience and courage,” continued Brown. “The City of Brampton celebrates their valour, courage, and resilience as a community.”
Earlier in the week, Marit Stiles, Leader of the Official Opposition of Ontario said she was "proud to stand in solidarity with the Tamil community," as Tamil Eelam National Flag Day was marked.
