More arrests in Jaffna over drug possession

Several people have been arrested in recent weeks having found to be in possession of illegal drugs, as illicit drug usage continues to plague the North-East.

Last week, at least two persons were arrested by Sri Lankan police for possessing 2 grams of ice (methamphetamine), one gram of heroin and several syringes.

Earlier today a further four people were arrested with 2 grams of heroin.

The arrests come in the wake of up to 10-drug related deaths reported to have occurred in Jaffna within the span of the last three months.

In other areas across the North-East, Tamils have alleged that criminal gangs have colluded with the Sri Lankan security forces to carry out activities such as illegal drug dealing. Whilst illicit drug users have been arrested, many of the criminal figures responsible for supplying and selling the drugs remain at large.
