MDMK leader says HC's order will never destroy Eelam in Tamil minds

The MDMK leader, Vaiko on Thursday rejected an order from the Chennai High Court instructing the burning of over 1700 copies of a book, compiling the speeches of the Tamil nationalist, Pazha Nedumaran.

“The comments made by Justice V. Muralidharan in his judgment dismissing the appeal are quite strong. They also shake the very base of the freedom of expression,” Vaiko was quoted by The Hindu as saying.

The copies of the book, entitled 'Tamil Eelam Sivakkirathu" were confiscated in 1994 when they were attempted to be exported to the Tamil diaspora and have remained with authorities since.

An attempt to seek legal intervention to have the books returned was dismissed and an appeal was lodged in 2007.

On Wednesday, after 11 years, the High Court issued an order for the destruction of the books on the grounds the LTTE was still a banned organisation in India.
