Mannar mass grave remains sent for carbon dating

Skeletal remains uncovered at the mass grave site in Mannar were sent for carbon dating in Florida, USA on Tuesday. 

The excavation and carbon dating process is being over seen by the Judicial Medical Officer, Shaminda Rajapaksa. 

The samples for carbon dating were collected under the orders of the Mannar magistrate and was done with the presence of the Senior Professor of Archaeology at the Kelaniya University, Raj Somadeva, officials from the Office on Missing Persons (OMP), government officers, relatives of the disappeared in Mannar and government attorneys.

The remains of 280 people have been found to date, with excavations continuing.
