Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has condemned moves to release the prisoners who have been jailed and were on death row for their alleged involvement in the assassination of Rajiv Gandhi.
India’s Supreme Court has issued a restraining order blocking Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa from releasing the prisoners, after the New Delhi government filed an appeal against the proposal.
In a statement, Singh stated the Central government was moving a petition “on fundamental issues of law”, following Jayalalithaa’s announcement that the prisoners were to be freed – a move widely welcomed across Tamil Nadu.
Singh went on to add that the proposed course of action “is not legally tenable and should not be proceeded with”, stating that “no government or party should be soft in the fight against terrorism”.
