Maaveerar week preparations completed at Jaffna University

Preparations for Maaveerar Week - or Great Heroes Week- have been completed at the University of Jaffna as the Tamil nation remember those who sacrificed their lives in the Tamil struggle for liberation.

Red and yellow flags have been hoisted around a memorial dedicated to the Maaveerar. The plaque on the memorial reads, “Oh you who sacrificed your precious lives for our country’s dawn of freedom.”

Across the North-East and diaspora memorialisation activities will be taking place this week to honour the lives that were lost in the struggle.

Over the last couple of weeks, Tamils in the homeland have been clearing Thuyilum Illams despite intimidation by the Sri Lankan army in preparation of Maaveerar Naal which falls on November 27.

We need your support

Sri Lanka is one of the most dangerous places in the world to be a journalist. Tamil journalists are particularly at threat, with at least 41 media workers known to have been killed by the Sri Lankan state or its paramilitaries during and after the armed conflict.

Despite the risks, our team on the ground remain committed to providing detailed and accurate reporting of developments in the Tamil homeland, across the island and around the world, as well as providing expert analysis and insight from the Tamil point of view

We need your support in keeping our journalism going. Support our work today.
