Jayalalitha calls on Indian centre to condemn genocide of Tamils in Sri Lanka and set up UN referendum on separate Tamil state

The Tamil Nadu chief minister J Jayalalithaa, called on the Indian government to table a resolution at the UN that condemned the genocide in Sri Lanka and looked to hold those responsible accountable for their actions whilst facilitating a referendum for Tamils to decide on the formation of a separate state in Sri Lanka, reports the Times of India.
"I request that India should sponsor a resolution in the United Nations condemning the genocide in Sri Lanka and to hold to account all those responsible for the genocide and thereby render justice to the Tamils in Sri Lanka. The resolution should also provide for holding a referendum amongst Tamils in Sri Lanka and displaced Sri Lankan Tamils across the world for formation of a separate Tamil Eelam," she said in a memorandum submitted to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Jayalalitha said that there were strong sentiments in Tamil Nadu on issues relating to India’s engagement with Sri Lanka.

The chief minister drew upon previous resolutions passed by the Tamil Nadu government that condemned the persecution of Tamils and on ongoing violations of their rights in Sri Lanka.

The memorandum was submitted prior to her visit to Delhi to see the prime minister today. During her meeting with Modi she outlined further issues relating to Tamil Nadu, including the need for a lasting solution for the Tamil Nadu fishermen who faced reduced fishing rights at offshore borders with Sri Lanka.
