Japan to provide US$1.2 million for demining in North

The Japanese government has committed to providing US$1.2 million in aid towards demining efforts in the Northern Province.

Kenichi Suganuma, Ambassador of Japan, signed the grant contract with SKAVITA Humanitarian Assistance and Relief Project (SHARP) and HALO Trust at the Japanese embassy in Colombo on Tuesday.

Retired Sri Lankan Lt. Col. V.S.M. Sarath Jayawardhene Programme Manager for SHARP said Muhumalai was “the most heavily mined area in the North” and praised Japanese efforts.

Fiona Kilpatrick, Programme Manager of HALO Trust, also thanked the Japanese, stating that “since 2003 the Government of Japan has given unwavering support to HALO and the Mine Action community in Sri Lanka”.
