Jaffna University declares Sri Lankan Independence Day as 'black day'

Students at the University of Jaffna joined Tamils across the North-East in declaring Sri Lanka's 73rd Independence Day as a 'black day'.

A banner was erected on one of the campus gates as Tamils in the North-East raised black flags across the North-East, marking the day as a day of protest.

A series of protests were carried out by the Tamil families of the disappeared in Jaffna, Vavuniya and Mullaitivu, defying court ordered bans and police intimidation, rejecting Sri Lanka's 'Independence Day'.

Tamils are also currently participating in a massive march from Pottuvil to Polikandi, calling for the United Nations and international community to heed Tamil calls justice and accountability. Tamil political parties and Tamil and Muslim civil society have continued their march despite attempts by Sri Lanka's security forces to disrupt the peaceful protest.

We need your support

Sri Lanka is one of the most dangerous places in the world to be a journalist. Tamil journalists are particularly at threat, with at least 41 media workers known to have been killed by the Sri Lankan state or its paramilitaries during and after the armed conflict.

Despite the risks, our team on the ground remain committed to providing detailed and accurate reporting of developments in the Tamil homeland, across the island and around the world, as well as providing expert analysis and insight from the Tamil point of view
