A demonstration organised by the Jaffna Christian Union in front of the Jaffna Bus stand took place yesterday, as Sri Lanka's parliament debated and passed the controversial Online Safety Bill.
The protestors demanded that the government not enforce the Online Safety Bill as it erodes the freedom of expression and could be used as a means to stifle dissent. They held placards calling on the government to curb measures that would otherwise threaten democracy. The peaceful demonstration which took place on Wednesday morning coincided with the debate in parliament.
Protests have been taking place across the North-East over the passing of the Online Safety Bill. A similar demonstration also took place yesterday in Batticaloa.

The bill has faced international condemnation, including from international NGOs and the UN human rights offices, as well as from Tamil parliamentarians.
