Italy, Algeria and Lesotho back Saharawi self determination

Italy, Algeria and Lesotho reaffirmed their support for self determination of the Saharawi people last week, after a series of high level meetings.

A joint statement released by Algeria and Italy in Rome said,

"The two sides reaffirmed their support to the efforts of the United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon and his special envoy to Western Sahara Christopher Ross, aimed at reaching a mutually acceptable, just and lasting political solution, providing for the self-determination of the Sahrawi people".

Meanwhile both Algeria and Lesotho stated they supported “a just and lasting settlement to this conflict based on the exercise by the People of Western Sahara of their inalienable right to self-determination through the holding of a free, fair and impartial referendum" and reaffirmed their "support to the fulfillment of the national aspirations of the people of the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic."
