An Italian appeals court has ruled that the LTTE should not be considered as a terrorist organisation, according to the Uthayan.
The ruling relates to the case of 28 Italian Tamils who were cleared of terrorism charges by a court in Napoli in 2011, as the LTTE cannot be described as a terrorist organisation.
The Italian state prosecutor appealed the sentence, resulting in a renewed trial, where a panel of 9 judges endorsed the ruling by the Napoli court and found the defendants not guilty.
The judges held that as the LTTE cannot be viewed as a terrorist organisation, membership of the LTTE was not illegal under Italian law, and as such cleared the defendents of all charges.
