Indian minister and senior BJP leaders charged for role in inciting anti Muslim riots

A minister in Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government and senior leaders from the ruling party have been charged with criminal conspiracy in connection with 1992 anti-muslim riots that saw the destruction of a mosque.

Water Resources Minister Uma Bharti and other senior leaders of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party were charged in court in the city of Lucknow, on Tuesday.

Speaking to Reuters, alawyer representing Muslim leaders and victims of violence, MR Shamshad, said,

“The judge accepted our plea to charge the leaders with criminal conspiracy and the accused are already facing trial for making provocative speeches that incited Hindus to pull down the Babri mosque.”

Leaders form the BJP party have been facing threat of prosecution for alleged involvement tin the mosque’s destruction over many years. Last month India’s Supreme Court that the party leaders must be tried with the case being brought to closure within the next 2 years.
