On the same day that eight Indian fishermen who were arrested by the Sri Lankan navy were flown to Chennai, the security forces announced it had detained two more Indian fishing boats and 14 Tamil Nadu fishermen, as tensions across the Palk Strait continued.
The Indian High Commission celebrated the repatriation of the eight fishermen with a tweet on Thursday.
That same day, the Sri Lankan navy announced it had arrested Indian fishermen it accused of poaching “during a special operation conducted in the sea area north of Mannar in the dark hours of 04th December 2024”.
The Sri Lankan navy admitted to detaining at least 68 Indian fishing boats and 529 Indian fishermen this year so far.
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin has sought intervention from India’s External Affairs Minister, S Jaishankar, underscoring the distress these incidents cause Tamil Nadu’s fishing communities earlier this year.
“These arrests not only disrupt livelihoods but also cause immense distress to their families,” Stalin wrote. He urged the central government to facilitate diplomatic efforts for an immediate solution.
