Indian civil rights organisations call for international investigation

Over  150 activists from various Indian civil rights organisations and political movements convened at a demonstration to call on India to sponsor a United Nations Human Rights Council mechanism calling for an independent international investigation mechanism into Sir Lanka’s crimes against Tamils.

Speaking at the event, Senthil, from Save Tamils Movement, condemned the Indian government for its silence on the issue whilst it worked to weaken the current resolution against Sri Lanka.

“The addition of the clause in consultation with and with the concurrence of the Government of Sri Lanka in the 9th point of the second draft clearly indicates the influence of India similar to previous resolutions.”

Prefessor Saraswathy from PUCL, highlighted India’s support for the Sri Lanka military during and after the conflict.

A spokesman from the Tamil National Liberation Movement, Comrade Thiagu, reiterated the necessity of calls for an independent international investigation into Sri Lanka’s war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide crimes committed against Tamils.

“We should say it is not only war crimes, it is a genocide of Tamils. Genocide of Tamils is a collection of war crimes and crimes against humanity committed by Sri Lanka against Tamils with an intention of ethnic cleansing... Our demand should be focused on independent international investigation of war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide crimes committed by Sri Lanka against Tamils.”

Representatives from Thozhilalar Seeramaippu Iyakkam, Dravidar Viduthalai Kzhagam, Tamizhar Kudiayarasu Munnani, Tamil Nadu Student Movement, Kadalora Makkal Paathugappu Iyakkam, Tamil Nadu Women’s Collective and Confederation for Sexual Minority Rights also reiterated similar calls.
