India thanks Sri Lanka for release of detained fishermen

India expressed its appreciation to Sri Lanka on Friday, for the pledged release of all fishermen by President Rajapaksa, as a goodwill gesture in view of India's Independence Day celebrations.

"Mr Sinha expressed his appreciation for the President's gesture to release Indian fishermen in Sri Lankan custody on the occasion of India's Independence Day that is celebrated tomorrow," a statement by the office of India's High Commissioner to Sri Lanka, Y.K Sinha said, NDTV reported.

According to the New Indian Express, 74 fishermen were released on Thursday, whilst a further 20 are expected to be released today.
