India summons SL High Commissioner amidst protests against Sri Lanka's MoD article

The Indian government is to summon the Sri Lankan High Commissioner over a defamatory article posted on the Sri Lankan Ministry of Defence website last week, said the Indian External Affairs Minister on Monday, reports The Hindu.

“The government strongly condemned the development,” said the minister, Sushma Swaraj.

The decision came as India's Lok Sabha was disrupted by protests, with AIADMK MPs demanding stricter action against Sri Lanka, the BBC reported.

The article, published on the Sri Lankan Ministry of Defence website, was entitled 'how meaningful are Jayalalithaa's love letters to Narendra Modi," and featured an illustration depicting the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and Indian Premier's faces encircled in a heart. See here for more.

Protests erupted across Tamil Nadu over the weekend as locals took to the streets outraged by the article.

The booking offices of Sri Lankan airlines were surrounded by angry protesters on Friday, whilst protesters, including Kollywood actors Vijay and Suriya, demonstrated outside Sri Lanka's the Sri Lankan consulate on Sunday. See more here.

An amateur Sri Lankan cricket team, that was due to play in a tournament in Chennai on Sunday, was sent back to Sri Lanka citing security concerns.
