Hunger striker hospitalised as protests continue in Tamil Nadu

An Indian student who has been on hunger strike in Tamil Nadu was hospitalised on Monday, as protests calling for an independent international investigation into genocide in Sri Lanka and a referendum on the island continued.

Nine students are currently hunger striking at the Mullivaikal Mutram in Thanjavur, with four more students joining the five college students who commenced their fast on Saturday.

The Hindu reported that one of the students P Karthick, was rushed to hospital after developing seizures on Monday.

Meanwhile, Mambalam railway station in Chennai was blocked by students, in solidarity with the hunger strikers, endorsing their demands.

One of the hunger striking students, Jayaprakash, said,

“We will continue our fast. The Centre should take appropriate steps before March 28 when the U.N. Human Rights Council session at Geneva ends”.
