Hugh crowds gather as Pope visits Vanni church

Hundreds of worshipers gathered at the Madhu Matha church in Vanni to witness Pope Francis' visit and prayers.

TNA MPs, the Northern Province's Chief Minister and councillors attended the event the church, which honours Our Lady of Madhu and is over 450 years old.

The Pope, who arrived in Sri Lanka yesterday, is on a pastoral visit to the island.

Speaking in Colombo on his arrival, Pope Francis stressed the need for truth and justice, in order for the island to see peace.

"The process of healing also needs to include the pursuit of truth, not for the sake of opening old wounds, but rather as a necessary means of promoting justice, healing and unity," he said.

Pope Francis was received by the newly elected president Maithripala Sirisena.
