Honouring the families of Eelam's heroes

The families of Eelam's heroes remember their loved ones, in Scarborough, Canada

In the week leading up to Tamil Remembrance Day (Maaveerar Naal), held on the 27th November, the families of Eelam's heroes were honoured in events held across the world.

In New Zealand, the Tamil Youth Organisation (TYO-NZ) led the event, held on Sunday 20th November in Auckland.

Commencing with a silent tribute to all those who lost their lives in the struggle for the freedom on the Eelam Tamil homeland, each maaveerar family was presented with a copy of the book, 'The Unspeakable Truth’, which highlights the genocide that led to the struggle for freedom.

In Cananda, families brought photographs of their beloved heroes, and lay flowers and candles in remembrance. The parents of a Maaveerar, marked the occasion with the release of an album, first released in Eelam in 2008.

Similar events were held across the four corners of London on Sunday.  In a heart-wrenching event, families came forward to share their memories of their beloved children, and public honour the bravery and sacrifice of those who had given their life to the struggle.

Sri Lanka is one of the most dangerous places in the world to be a journalist. Tamil journalists are particularly at threat, with at least 41 media workers known to have been killed by the Sri Lankan state or its paramilitaries during and after the armed conflict.

Despite the risks, our team on the ground remain committed to providing detailed and accurate reporting of developments in the Tamil homeland, across the island and around the world, as well as providing expert analysis and insight from the Tamil point of view
