Home of student suspended for 'ragging offences' attacked

The home of a student that was suspended for offences of 'ragging' other students was vandalised and his belongings were trashed by four men, last week.

This incident took place close to the Anaikkottai Ganesh temple – which falls under the Mannipay Police Division – at around 10pm last Tuesday (Feb 12). The individuals entered the house looking for the student. After learning he was absent, they proceeded to smash the car parked in front of the house and the windows of the house and left.

Two students were suspended from entering the Jaffna University premises after investigations revealed their misconduct and involvement in ragging against other students. The student who was first given suspension out of the pair, was targeted by the four individuals.

Following the incident, Mannipay Police have started investigations and four students have been taken into custody.

Aava Gang released a statement on their Facebook page last Tuesday (Feb 12) to claim they were supposedly responsible for the attack. They warned that ‘the punishment will continue’ for individuals who engage in ragging other students in the future. They stated “Those who threaten the values of Jaffna University – which is representative of Tamil identity – will be challenged by us. As such, the student implicated in the ragging offences was attacked on our behalf. Ragging has caused students great distress.”

The raiders have not been confirmed as members of Aava Gang and investigations are ongoing.
