Heavy rains again in Mullaitivu after recent floods

Heavy rains fell in Mullaitivu today just weeks after families recovered from recent flooding across the Vanni area.

Families continue to watch apprehensively as the rains fall, fearful of further flooding and damage to agricultural land.

More than 120,000 people were affected across the Vanni due to the floods at the end of last year, according to data released by the government’s Disaster Management Centre (DMC).

The data comes as reports emerged in Kilinochchi the flooding was caused by the negligence of officials who allowed Iranamadu tank was allowed to overfill followed by the simultaneous opening of all the sluice gates.

An overwhelming response in donations from Tamil diaspora worldwide has been distributed across the Vanni via local civil society groups, student organisations and charities.
