Handover of Jaffna cultural hall to central government reversed by court

The administration of the Navalar Cultural Hall in Nallur, which was previously handled by the Jaffna Municipal council, was handed over to the Department of Hindu and Cultural Affairs, which is subsumed by the Ministry Buddhasasana, Religious and Cultural Affairs on the directive of the Governor of the Northern Province, Jeevan Thiagarajah.

Many people protested the decision by the Governor on Tuesday 28th March, 2023.

Former municipal council member and attorney-atl-aw W. Parthiban filed a case against the directive by the Governor. Following this, the Jaffna High Court issued an interim order reversing the decision by the Governor on Tuesday 4th April. The next hearing will be held on Wednesday 26th April.
