'Go Home Gota' - Global Sri Lankan diaspora protest against Rajapaksa administration

Tasmania, Australia

The Sri Lankan diaspora has staged protests in London, New Zealand, Australia, USA, Toronto among numerous countries all over the world as well as in Sri Lanka to express solidarity against the Sri Lankan government's failure to address the current crisis.  Auckland, New Zealand

Currently, protests are ongoing in Tasmania, Perth, Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne in Australia, with protestors displaying placards reading "Stop abusing Sri Lankans" and "Go home Gota". These protests came after Sri Lanka's president declared a state of emergency, a nationwide curfew and a social media ban in Sri Lanka, which has since been lifted.

As anti-government continues to spread throughout the world, anti-government #gohomegota hashtags are trending in variations across the globe.

Sri Lanka is one of the most dangerous places in the world to be a journalist. Tamil journalists are particularly at threat, with at least 41 media workers known to have been killed by the Sri Lankan state or its paramilitaries during and after the armed conflict.

Despite the risks, our team on the ground remain committed to providing detailed and accurate reporting of developments in the Tamil homeland, across the island and around the world, as well as providing expert analysis and insight from the Tamil point of view
