Further delays likely to government disappearances commission

The Sri Lankan government's disappearances commission is likely to be further delays, said its chairman, Maxwell Paranagama.

The commission is still processing data gathered since it began a year ago, Paranagama told The Nation.

Last week, Paranagama claimed civil society organisations had falsely inflated numbers of missing persons from the North of the island.

The further delays come amid the government's appointment of international experts to the commission.

The most recent appointment, an Indian human rights activist, Avdhash Kaushal, urged Mahinda Rajapaksa to reach a compromise with the Tamils.

“I will suggest to Rajapaksa that he should go for a compromise with the Tamils, because peace is very important not only for Sri Lanka but for the whole of South Asia. And the Tamils should give up the bullet for the ballot, and negotiate with the government. The experts’ panel should render justice. We have to solve the problem,” Kaushal told the Indian Express on Sunday. See here for more.
