Former ICC chief prosecutor calls for recognition of Yazidi genocide

The former chief prosecutor for the International Criminal Court (ICC) pushed for the recognition of the persecution of the Yazidi community as an “ongoing genocide”.

Luis Moreno Ocampo told Reuters in an interview that “it's a very clear case”. “It's an ongoing genocide because there are still people in captivity," he added.

Meeting with the Kurdistan Regional Government’s (KRG) Prime Minister Nechirvan Barzani in Erbil, Mr Ocampo said “I will support the KRG’s attempts in any ways to identify the Yazidi massacre as genocide”.

"It's up to us to provide information that allows the ICC to understand, yes, we have jurisdiction in this case in this way," he stated.

The former chief prosecutor went on to add that prosecution of those accused of abuses was important, primarily the Islamic State, it would not address all the Yazidi people’s concerns.

“Victims need truth, victims need reparation, victims need justice and victims need the security that the crimes will not be repeated,” he said.
