Families of the disappeared protest against SLFP event

Families of the disappeared across the North-East protested against the the Sri Lankan Freedom Party (SLFP) local organiser, for deceiving them into attending an SLFP campaign event on the pretence of collecting information about the missing.

An advert had been published in a local newspaper in the preceding days asking families of the disappeared to come to Jaffna to attend a meeting purported to be about delivering further information about the missing.

Families, who had travelled from across the North to attend, were told details of the missing would be collected, similar to what had already happened in the East.

However, after they arrived they became suspicious, as no effort was made to collect such details.

When the families asked the organiser to explain what was taking place, they were told to sit calmly as they would be served with food and drinks shortly.

Outraged by what they described as a deception, the families said: "Do not do politics using the feelings of us who have lost our kith and kin."

Families reported that they were assaulted by the SLFP supporter following a heated verbal argument.

A complaint has since been filed by the families with the police.
