Facebook page to ‘save’ soldier convicted of Tamil killings garners thousands of likes

A Facebook page started to “save war hero Sunil Rathnayaka”, the Sinhala soldier sentenced to death over the massacre of 8 Tamil civilians, has garnered over 13,000 likes, within a day of being set up.

Tamil Civil Society Forum spokesperson RK Guruparan, said in a tweet “This, quite sadly, is among the reasons why a ‘credible’ domestic mechanism won’t be possible in #SriLanka”, after the BBC’s Azzam Ameen posted the page on Twitter.

The Colombo High Court sentenced the staff sergeant over the murder of 8 civilians in the town of Mirusuvil, after 8 Tamil civilians, including 2 children, were arrested, murdered and buried in a mass grave by Sri Lankan security forces.
