EU welcomes UN investigation team on Sri Lanka

The European Union (EU) has welcomed the appointment of three international experts to the UNHCHR investigative team on Sri Lanka and called on the Sri Lankan government to “fully co-operate” with the upcoming investigation.

In a statement released on Tuesday, the Spokesperson for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy of the EU said,

“We urge the Government of Sri Lanka to fully cooperate with the investigation to address accountability issues as an important step for fostering genuine reconciliation.”

The statement went on to call upon the Sri Lankan government too “also allow all stakeholders to engage without fear of reprisals.” 

The EU also noted that the full implementation of the Lessons Learnt and Reconciliation Commission and a “sustainable political solution are essential for peaceful growth and stability in Sri Lanka."
