End the occupation! - North to East rally reaches Mullaitivu amidst Sri Lankan police surveillance

The 'North to East' rally demanding an end to the occupation of the Tamil homeland reached Mullaitivu this evening despite surveillance by Sri Lankan police.

Protestors who set off from Paranthan junction in Kilinochchi earlier today were followed and photographed by plain-clothed Sri Lankan police officers on motorbikes.

The officers who claimed to be media workers from Hiru news were reluctant in showing the protestors their media cards.

As the rally passed through Theravil, protestors lit a flame at Theravil Thuyilum Illam and paid their respects to those who sacrificed their lives in the Tamil struggle for liberation.

Protestors marched across Vadduvakkal Bridge, a site where many Tamil families handed over their loved ones to the Sri Lankan military over a decade ago.

We need your support

Sri Lanka is one of the most dangerous places in the world to be a journalist. Tamil journalists are particularly at threat, with at least 41 media workers known to have been killed by the Sri Lankan state or its paramilitaries during and after the armed conflict.

Despite the risks, our team on the ground remain committed to providing detailed and accurate reporting of developments in the Tamil homeland, across the island and around the world, as well as providing expert analysis and insight from the Tamil point of view

We need your support in keeping our journalism going. Support our work today.
